    Self-Reflection Essay

My writing has developed slowly, but surely because I realized that there were things that were basically unnecessary to my essays, and I slowly became a little bit more detailed in my essays. My thinking about the politics of language hasn’t changed much since I believe that when learning, literacy and language are very important parts in a person’s life. The Rhetorical Analysis Essay taught me the most this semester, because it was the one that I had the most struggles with, but I also learned that there are other people that can connect to my situation with being bilingual. Although I was able to use Amy Tan as a big reference in my Essay, I had made simple mistakes, such as adding very long quotes from her story to try and support my claim, having a big run on sentences and having trouble summarizing my quotes. I wasn’t so sure on how to express my initial thoughts on each quote that I used for this Essay. The assignment that stood out to me was the peer review assignments because it wasn’t able to help me out too much. I’m also not too good at helping others out with the essays since I also need help with my own essay. I achieved most of the Course Learning Objectives this semester by having other points-of-view from articles that were able to help with my essays thanks to research for my claim to support my essays. As a student, I believe it has helped my value and given importance towards being bilingual, because like I said in my first cover letter, “It has impacted me in a positive way since knowing two languages has helped me to expand my knowledge of other cultures in other parts of the world and has helped me to communicate better and express myself also.” The essay that I feel like I did best on is the Phase 1 essay (WLLN), because I felt like I was able to express myself the best since it was an essay based on my own personal experiences with language and being bilingual, for example, when I mentioned in the first Cover Letter, “I felt a bit more confident since I am able to relate to most of the people in class. A certain assignment that was able to help me out with my essay was the Amy Tan assignment, because she is one of the many people that can relate to my situation, which was helping out my parents with translation and being able to learn about my own culture.” It shows that thanks to the influence of others, I was able to express myself better since I was able to relate to others. I thought it would be more difficult than expected knowing that it would be worrying for me having to express myself either way. My Phase 3 Essay (Research Essay) helped me realize that there are a lot of people that are admirable because they were able to overcome obstacles in their lives with a new language and how it ended up helping and changing their lives and having to confront others. It makes you realize that being an immigrant in the US isn’t easy like some people might think it is. At the end of the Essay (my conclusion), when I said, “It is seen either in a good or bad way, but the bad things that people say make it look like it would be better on the bad side than the good side, because people can judge you for knowing a different language that they don’t know about, or you having struggles to speak the main language in the US (which is English).”, I noticed I had made a similar claim in most of my Essays, which I don’t think is necessarily a bad thing, but I feel like I could’ve made a few changes in my words for each Essay so it wouldn’t sound too repetitive as a claim. One good thing about the claim is that you are able to find some good counterclaims from other articles to put in the Essay, you can even use multiple articles to make a good counterclaim. To end off my Self-Reflection, there are definitely things that I can still work on in my Essays, but I still think my writing has developed slowly, but surely because I realized that there were things that were basically unnecessary to my essays. Taking your time on things can make it better instead of doing everything quickly and doing it the incorrect way.
