My Experiences with Literacy and Language

    Cover Letter

I believe that my experience with reading and writing have had an impact on me from when I started to learn until the present because it is the beginning of basic learning. A few ways that it helped me was when I started writing, I began to comprehend the meaning of words, and by comprehending the meaning of words, that was when I began to learn reading as well. For example, when I started to read books, I remember being in elementary school, and reading Dr. Seuss books all the time. “Go dog go” was an iconic book for me because I remember being very excited to read it, even though I already knew the events in the book.
I think the most significant thing about having written this assignment is to remember the process of learning to write and read and how it impacts me and acquiring knowledge.
With regard to language and literacy it has impacted me in a positive way since knowing two languages has helped me to expand my knowledge of other cultures in other parts of the world and has helped me to communicate better and express myself also.
My thoughts about the assignment before class were that I wasn’t confident at all with what I wanted to speak and write about in my essay. But, when I saw my other classmates being able to present their point-of-view, I felt a bit more confident since I am able to relate to most of the people in class. A certain assignment that was able to help me out with my essay was the Amy Tan assignment, because she is one of the many people that can relate to my situation, which was helping out my parents with translation and being to learn about my own culture.

My Experiences with Literacy and Language

I believe that when learning, literacy and language are very important parts in a person’s life. A particular moment in my language/literacy experience was when I started to learn how to write my name when I was in kindergarten at 5 years old. I started by writing down all the letters of the alphabet in elementary school. I remember going back home from school and after a break, I continued practicing on how to write my name with a marker and whiteboard. It wasn’t easy at first at all, especially for a 5-year-old. It was very frustrating at first, but I was very determined to do it correctly. I kept on messing up the letters, simple ones like the letter “a”. It was difficult for me to put it the right way. I decided to give it a rest, and then after a few days, I managed to write my name the correct way. I felt proud of myself for finally being able to accomplish my goal. The reason why I was finally able to do it was because I was determined throughout the entire time and trying very hard ended up paying off. What influenced my determination as a child were my parents because they encouraged me to do my best when I would make a mistake. Another struggle that I had around that time was that I had to balance learning to read and write Spanish and English at the same time. But thanks to that, it is safe to say that I am now bilingual, and I am able to help my parents and others who need help translating. Another advantage that I have is that I am able to learn about other cultures, and other people around the world are able to do that as well with a second language. I remember speaking Spanish first since my parents are from Argentina. They wanted me to speak Spanish fluidly. It started to become a struggle for me because I started going to school which means that I started to learn English, and I started to speak English more consistently. When I would speak in Spanish, I would start messing up verbs and my parents would have to correct me. The more English that I would learn, the more Spanish words I would mess up. Until eventually, after a few years, I was able to balance speaking English and Spanish. I practiced so much that I was finally able to not just speak but read and write in Spanish as well. It’s safe to say that learning more than one language was worth it because I am able to help my parents and others who need help translating. Another advantage that I have is that I am able to learn about other cultures, and other people around the world are able to do that as well with a second language.
I remember how I practiced the correct pronunciation of each word, and so little by little I began to read at first with doubts if I was doing it right and that’s how I began to read my first stories (tales) in both English and Spanish. I also read stories at night, that’s how I began to read and understand that way, the importance of reading that helps you find out what is happening in the world, socializing with people, expressing yourself and acquiring knowledge. What impacted me the most for the better was going to the library, because I got a lot of help from the people working there. I felt comfortable there because it is a great place where you can read/get books and it helps with writing. You can also take books home to read and help you out.
I remember being in elementary school and reading Dr. Seuss books all the time. “Go dog go” was an iconic book for me because I remember being very excited to read it, even though I already knew the events in the book.
Reading and writing can impact a person’s life by helping you succeed in life, like studying whatever you want to be in the future. It’s the first step in learning. If you don’t learn how to read and write, you won’t be capable of doing any basics. My experience with language and literacy connects to larger social realities by getting information based on events from the news, and knowledge. We even use it to create skills to express something we think or feel or interesting information, which in my case are events that are now part of history.
